Our journey started in April 2023, as we launched the show in a wonderful event at the Erbil International Hotel. The event brought together students across main universities with ministers, governors, foreign diplomats, representative of think tanks and NGOs, influential figures from civil society and business leaders.
Ako Mohammed, CEO of Rudaw, Jeanine Plasschaert, special representative of the UNSG to Iraq, Futoshi Matsumoto, Japanese ambassador to Iraq, Rosy Cave, British consul general in Erbil and Adel Bakawan, director of French Research Center on Iraq were among our keynote speakers during the event.
“
Such a platform could shape professional journalism and boost freedom of expression

The show is produced and hosted by Bestoon Khalid, a prominent journalist based in Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Seasoned with years of experience in media and journalism, Bestoon curated the show from scratch and brought together thousands of youths around Iraq, from Kurdistan to southern, mid and western of the country, paving their way to free expression, empowerment, and active participation in governance. His notable efforts resulted in enhancing accountability and transparency in addition to bridging the gaps between generations on one hand and between the decision makers and the public on the other hand.
Publically known as the Lions, a group of volunteers forge the backbone of the talk show. Coming from diverse backgrounds across 18 governorates of Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, these young minds shape the show, by organizing seminars and workshops for their peers at their universities to empower them and train them for more engagement and to make their voice heard.
